The Phenom Still Has It

By JAR Rocina

A three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player, Alyssa Valdez continues to be an example of sustained excellence in Philippine volleyball, reinforcing her status as one of the most dominant and influential spikers of her generation. Her career time capsule—from a promising standout in the juniors’ program of the University of Santo Tomas to a reverential figure in the collegiate ranks with Ateneo de Manila University—reflects both individual brilliance and a capacity to raise team performance. Central to this legacy was her leadership in leading Ateneo to consecutive UAAP championships, a feat that underscored her competitive spirit and on-court savy.
Valdez’s contributions extend beyond the local collegiate scene, emphasizing the increasing globalization of Filipino volleyball talent. Her stints in professional leagues in Thailand and Taiwan not only expanded her tactical and technical repertoire but also exposed her to different playing systems and higher levels of competition. This international exposure has been instrumental in improving her durability and strenghtening her role as a complete player.
In the professional scene, Valdez serves as the cornerstone and team captain of the Creamline Cool Smashers in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL). Under her leadership, the team has won multiple championships, establishing itself as a dominant team in Philippine club volleyball. Aside from her statistical contributions, her presence provides a lot of intangibles—stability in high-pressure situations, mentorship for younger players, and a culture of accountability and resilience.
Technically, Valdez’s game is defined by a perfect combination of vertical explosiveness, timing precision, and shot variation. Her attacking efficiency comes not only from raw power but also from her ability to read defensive formations and adjust mid-air, making her a constant offensive threat. Moreover, her defensive work rate and transitional play lately, contribute to her reputation as a well-rounded outside hitter.
What ultimately distinguishes Valdez from her peers is her longevity at the elite level. In a sport that continually changes, her ability to adapt, maintain maximum level of performance, and deliver in crucial moments is due to rigid physical conditioning and psychological focus.
As such, the moniker “The Phenom” remains not merely an accolade of past achievements but an ongoing proof to her lasting influence on the sport.
