NBA PLAYOFFS | Josh Hart heroics propel Knicks to 2-0 series lead over Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers walked into Madison Square Garden for Game 2 with a hyper-focused defensive blueprint: neutralize Jalen Brunson.

For 24 minutes, it worked flawlessly. The Cavs smothered the Knicks’ All-Star point guard, holding him to a mere 2 points in the first half. But as Cleveland learned a brutal postseason lesson on Thursday night, picking your poison against this version of the New York Knicks is a losing proposition.

The Knicks simply have too many weapons, and they now hold a commanding 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals following a 109-93 blowout victory.

When Brunson was swarmed, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns stepped up seamlessly to shoulder the first-half load. Their ability to stretch the floor and punish the defense completely exposed Cleveland’s strategy.

By the time the second half rolled around, the Cavaliers’ defense was stretched to its absolute breaking point — and that’s when Josh Hart blew the game wide open.

Hart exploded in the final two quarters, knocking down five 3-pointers and leaving the reeling Cavaliers in the dust. The Knicks were paced by Hart’s game-high 26 points, while a resilient Brunson and an efficient Bridges chipped in 19 points apiece to round out a balanced offensive onslaught.

On the other side of the floor, Donovan Mitchell did everything he could to keep Cleveland afloat. Mitchell matched Hart with a brilliant 26-point performance of his own, but he lacked the necessary baseline support as the Knicks’ depth pulled away.

With the series shifting to Ohio for Game 3, a change of scenery at Rocket Arena might be exactly what the Cavaliers need to save their season. But if they can’t find an answer for New York’s relentless perimeter shooting and depth, this series could be over before it even makes it back to New York.
