NBA PLAYOFFS ┃ Physical defense, deep bench propel Thunder to 3-2 series lead over Spurs

The Oklahoma City Thunder are one win away from advancing, riding a suffocating defensive game plan and an explosive bench effort to a 127-114 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, securing a crucial 3-2 series edge.

After struggling to contain Victor Wembanyama earlier in the series, the Thunder adjusted by turning up the physicality. Oklahoma City swarmed the French phenom from the opening tip, disrupting his rhythm and forcing him into tough looks. While Wembanyama still managed a team-high 22 points, the Thunder successfully neutralized his ability to completely take over the game—a massive victory for OKC’s defensive frontline.

As has been the story all season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paced the Thunder. Making a 32-point masterpiece look almost pedestrian, the MVP candidate dissected the Spurs’ defense at will.

However, the real story of the night was Oklahoma City’s depth. Despite missing two key rotation pieces, the Thunder bench didn’t miss a beat.

  • Alex Caruso provided his signature high-octane energy, chipping in a crucial 22 points alongside elite perimeter defense.
  • Jared McCain stepped up big in expanded minutes, catching fire from deep to log an invaluable 20 points.

The Thunder can close out the Spurs in game 6, with the well-rested Knicks waiting in the wings.
