The Manila Diggers appear to have found a new gear. Following a humbling defeat at the hands of their Cambodian counterparts in the recent Asian Challengers Cup, the Diggers have returned to domestic play with a vengeance, stringing together a series of dominant performances that have reshaped the league’s competitive landscape.
The resurgence began with a statement win against the “Gentle Giants,” Dynamic Herb Cebu FC. While the first half remained a cagey, scoreless affair, the match reached a turning point when Coach Kim Versales was dismissed following a technical red card. Rather than crumbling under the loss of their leader on the touchline, the Diggers seemed galvanized by the adversity. They dismantled the Cebuano side in the second half, securing a clinical 4-0 victory and signaling to the league that they were no longer a team to be trifled with.
If the win over Cebu was a wake-up call, the subsequent match against One Taguig FC was a masterclass. Anticipated to be a grueling battle between title contenders, the Diggers instead dictated the tempo from the opening whistle, shellacking Taguig 3-0.
The momentum carried into their next fixture against Stallion Laguna FC. In a display of pure offensive might, the Diggers overran the Stallions with a 5-1 drubbing. The only blemish on this remarkable run was a narrow 1-0 setback against Davao Aguilas-UMAK, a close encounter that remains the only recent dent in an otherwise immaculate record.
The emergence of Kenji Nishioka as a primary scoring threat from the midfield has added a new dimension to the attack, while Modou Manneh continues to provide both the creative spark and the finishing touch. With Forwards Ceesay and Touray consistently finding the back of the net, Coach Kim’s strategy is clear: by spreading the scoring load across the pitch, the Diggers have transformed into a multi-faceted goal-scoring machine that is increasingly difficult to contain.
